Gourmet Food Lovers Tour - Rome

Posted on 31 December 2016

We can recommend the Gourmetaly For Food Lovers Only tour in Rome. Starting in the famed Farnese Square, home to wonderful cheese and meat shops, plus a morning fresh fruit and vegetable market.

A short walk away is Antico Forno Roscioli, reputed to be 'the best bakery in Rome', winner of he all Italy 2015 competition for the best Panettone.

Antico Forno Roscioli opened in the early 1970s—the 1824 date at the entrance references another bakery that was on the site; many of the baked goods, pizza bianca among them, have survived unchanged.

Not far away is the old Jewish Ghetto, home to some of the best food in Rome. Isolated for 300 years, the Jewish district developed its own unique variation of food Romano.

Notable at this time of the year, with artichokes in season, is fried, or rather, double fried Globe Artichokes - delicious.

Pasta, is of course ubiquitous; a must is the local speciality, Cacio e Pepe (Pasta with Cheese and Pepper), j spaghetti with Pecorino Romano cheese and just a sprinkling of black pepper. The true Cacio e Pepe has no garlic or olive oil, but just a little boiling water to make the cheese creamy.
Finish off with true Gelato - for the best - look for shops with a small range of flavours, seasonal fruits and, if its pistacio the colour should be brown rather than the bright green, so typical of the tourist shops. the bright green below is 'kiwi fruit', tart and unusual in a gelato.
For the very brave or foolhardy, finish off with the local liqueur, Limoncello, made from fresh lemons, often from small specialist orchards.
